• New cycling competition rules annulled by court for discriminating against trans women

  The competition regulations for women's races, tightened by an international cycling organization in July 2023, have been ruled discriminatory against trans women by the Brussels Court of First Instance. The ruling follows a case brought by a trans cyclist against the international cycling body and the Belgian cycling federation. The athlete was excluded based on the new regulations, which imposed strict conditions on trans women's participation in female categories. The court found the rules discriminatory and annulled them. The organization must pay moral damages to the athlete. Both organizations can still appeal the decision.

  Until mid-2023, the cyclist met the eligibility criteria for women’s races. The previous regulations required a very low testosterone level for at least 24 uninterrupted months. Since July 2023, however, the rules have changed: trans women must now prove they began transitioning before puberty or, at the latest, before age 12 in order to compete in the women’s category. This change led to the revocation of the athlete’s license and her immediate exclusion from women’s competitions.

  New conditions are disproportionate, unscientific, and unrealistic

  The court held that the new rules create unequal treatment between cis and trans women. For such differential treatment to be lawful, it must pursue a legitimate goal and be necessary and proportionate. While the court acknowledged the aim of fairness in female sports, it found the new rules excessive and unsupported by scientific evidence.

  The court noted that the cycling organization itself had previously warned of the lack of reliable scientific data on the matter and had recognized the need for new research. The organization’s medical director repeatedly stated that current knowledge does not support the claim that trans women retain an advantage from male puberty. The court concluded: “There is no scientific proof that women’s cycling competitions, which include both cisgender and transgender women, pose a threat to sporting fairness.”

  The court also ruled that requiring transition before the age of 12 is unrealistic and effectively excludes all trans women. In practice, it would require the use of puberty blockers from a very early age.

  A landmark ruling for trans cyclists

   

  The court’s order is immediately enforceable and prevents the organization from refusing licenses or participation in women’s races based on these rules. However, the organization may still choose to appeal.

• Nieuwe wielerreglement door rechtbank vernietigd omdat het transvrouwen discrimineert

  Het in juli 2023 door een internationale wielerorganisatie aangescherpte wedstrijdreglement voor vrouwenwedstrijden is, volgens de rechtbank van eerste aanleg in Brussel, discriminerend voor transvrouwen. Die uitspraak komt er in een zaak van een trans wielrenster tegen een internationale wielerorganisatie en de Belgische wielerfederatie. De atlete werd uitgesloten op basis van een nieuw reglement van de internationale organisatie, dat strenge voorwaarden stelt aan de toegang van trans vrouwen tot vrouwenwedstrijden. Dit reglement is discriminerend, oordeelt de rechtbank, en verklaart het nietig. De organisatie moet een morele schadevergoeding aan de vrouw betalen. Beide organisaties kunnen nog wel beroep aantekenen tegen het vonnis.

  Tot midden 2023 voldeed de wielrenster aan de voorwaarden om deel te nemen aan vrouwenwedstrijden. De vorige regelgeving van de internationale wielerorganisatie vereiste een zeer laag testosterongehalte gedurende ten minste 24 maanden zonder onderbreking. Maar sinds juli 2023 gelden er aangescherpte regels: trans vrouwen moeten nu ook aantonen dat ze vóór de puberteit, of in ieder geval vóór hun twaalfde levensjaar, in transitie gingen om in de vrouwencategorie te mogen deelnemen. Deze wijziging van het reglement leidde tot de intrekking van de licentie van de atlete en haar onmiddellijke uitsluiting van vrouwenwedstrijden.

  Nieuwe voorwaarden zijn disproportioneel, zonder wetenschappelijk bewijs en onrealistisch

  De rechtbank oordeelde dat deze regels een verschil in behandeling tussen trans vrouwen en cis vrouwen inhouden. Om een dergelijk verschil in behandeling wettelijk toe te staan, moet het een legitiem doel dienen en moeten de regels noodzakelijk en proportioneel zijn. De rechter erkende dat de wielerorganisatie streeft naar eerlijkheid in vrouwelijke sportcompetities, maar constateerde dat de huidige regels te ver gaan en niet gebaseerd zijn op voldoende wetenschappelijk bewijs.

  De rechtbank herinnerde eraan dat de internationale wielerorganisatie zélf had gewaarschuwd voor het gebrek aan betrouwbare wetenschappelijke gegevens over dit onderwerp en de noodzaak onderschreef om nieuw onderzoek te doen. De medisch directeur van deze organisatie heeft herhaaldelijk verklaard dat het op basis van de huidige kennis onmogelijk is om te bevestigen dat trans vrouwen een voordeel behouden dat voortvloeit uit de mannelijke puberteit. Voor de rechter is de conclusie duidelijk: “Het is wetenschappelijk niet bewezen dat wielerwedstrijden voor vrouwen, waaraan zowel cisgender- als transgendervrouwen deelnemen, een probleem vormen voor de sportieve eerlijkheid.”

  De rechter constateerde ook dat de voorwaarde om vóór de leeftijd van 12 jaar in transitie te gaan onrealistisch is en dat deze voorwaarde in feite alle trans vrouwen uitsluit. In de praktijk zou de transitie op zeer jonge leeftijd moeten worden gestart, door een continu gebruik van puberteitsremmers.

  Een uitspraak van groot belang voor trans wielrensters

  Het bevel van de rechtbank is onmiddellijk uitvoerbaar en bepaalt dat de wielerorganisatie niet langer het recht heeft om op basis van dit reglement een licentie of deelname aan vrouwenwedstrijden te weigeren. De wielerorganisatie kan nog beslissen om in beroep te gaan.

• Tot 17.000 bezoekers voor de eerste Limburg Pride

  Tussen de 10.000 en 17.000 bezoekers hebben de eerste Limburg Pride bezocht in Hasselt. Thema van deze eerste pride-optocht in Limburg is :”Love Yourself, Embrace the Journey“. De hele optocht rond de kleine ring van Hasselt verliep zonder noemenswaardige incidenten. Langs het parcours hadden enkele betogers van Voorpost plaats genomen.

  “De opkomst is fantastisch en boven alle verwachtingen”, zo zei Limburg Pride voorzitter Bert Broone na afloop van de prideoptocht. “We hebben het weer en de sfeer mee. Ik denk dat we tussen de 15.000 en 17.000 mensen naar Hasselt hebben gehaald.” Volgens de politie ligt het aantal bezoekers rond de tienduizend.

  De eerste Limburgse pride stond in het teken van mentale gezondheid bij LGBTQ+ personen. Deze groep heeft immers meer te maken met discriminatie, psychische problemen en ze ondernemen drie tot vijf keer meer een zelfdodingspoging dan hun heteroseksuele tegenhangers. Ook Federaal minister van Gelijke Kansen Rob Beenders (Vooruit) liep mee tijdens de optocht door het centrum van Hasselt. In aanloop van de eerste pride in zijn thuisstad liet de minister ontvallen dat hij wilt dat er in elke Limburgse gemeente of politiezone een meldpunt voor geweld tegen LGBTI+ personen komt.

  Na de pride-parade vonden er op het Kolonel Dusartplein plaats van Bart Kaël, Belle Perez, 2Fabiola en verschillende dragqueens. Ook werd de datum voor de volgende editie bekend gemaakt. Die gaat door op 12 juli 2026.

• Record number of delegations and bilingual livestream at Antwerp Pride 2025

  Antwerp Pride has unveiled the program for it's 18th edition this summer, which will take place from Thursday, August 6 to Sunday, August 10. The highlight will be the Pride Parade on Saturday.

  This year’s theme is “Do Not, Just March. Listen. Act. Commit.” “The past months have shown that we cannot lean back when it comes to human rights,” says chair Geert van Praet. “Pride is a celebration, but also a moment of awareness and commitment. Political parties, companies, schools, unions, and associations must follow through on their support beyond the festivities. Diversity and inclusion must remain a year-round priority — in the workplace, the classroom, and on the sports field.”

  Visitors are also encouraged to do more than just attend. “Listen to one another. Stand up against injustice, also internationally, and commit to every letter of the LGBTQIA+ community. Human rights are not a pick-and-choose menu.”

  This year, the parade assembly point moves to Hessenplein from 11 a.m. The parade starts at 2 p.m. and moves via Brouwersvliet to the riverfront, ending at the Love United Festival on Ledeganckkaai. A record 87 delegations will participate this year.

  There will be water stations and waste points along the route. As last year, the parade will be streamed live by Antwerp Pride’s media partners. New this year is a dedicated French-language stream with francophone hosts, so all of Belgium can join in.

  At 3 p.m., the Love United Festival opens with two stages and a wide range of DJs. Entry is free. The Pride Village with LGBTQIA+ organizations will also be on site.

  On Sunday, the Closing Festival takes over the Scheldt quays from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. with performances by Sederginne, Level Six, Sylver, DJ Kat and many more.

   

  LGBTQ bars and venues across the city will host special events throughout the week, including the traditional Midsummer Party at Café Den Draak and a spectacular edition of Woodpop at Cargo Club.

• Une parade record et deux livestreams pour Antwerp Pride 2025

  Anvers a dévoilé le programme de l’Antwerp Pride. La 18e édition se tiendra cette année du jeudi 6 au dimanche 10 août, avec comme moment fort la grande parade du samedi.

  Le thème de cette année est « Do Not, Just March. Listen. Act. Commit. » « Ces derniers mois ont montré que nous ne pouvions pas rester passifs face aux droits humains », déclare Geert van Praet, président d’Antwerp Pride. « La Pride est une fête, mais aussi un moment de prise de conscience et d’engagement. Il revient maintenant aux partis politiques, entreprises, écoles, syndicats et associations de poursuivre leur engagement après la fête. La diversité et l’inclusion doivent figurer à l’agenda toute l’année — au travail, à l’école, dans le sport. »

  Les visiteurs aussi sont appelés à s’engager : « Écoutez-vous, opposez-vous à toute forme d’injustice, même à l’international, et engagez-vous pour toutes les lettres de la communauté LGBTQIA+. Les droits humains ne sont pas un menu à la carte. »

  Le rassemblement pour la parade se fait cette année sur la Hessenplein à partir de 11h. La parade commence à 14h via Brouwersvliet, longe les quais de l’Escaut et se termine au Love United Festival sur la Ledeganckkaai. Cette année, 87 délégations y participeront.

  Comme les années précédentes, la parade sera diffusée en direct. Nouveauté : une version francophone de la retransmission est prévue, avec des intervenants francophones pour faire profiter toute la Belgique de la parade.

  Dès 15h, le Love United Festival ouvrira ses portes avec des DJ’s sur deux scènes. L’accès est gratuit. La Pride Village, où de nombreuses organisations LGBTQIA+ présentent leurs actions, se trouve également sur le site du festival.

  Le dimanche, le Closing Festival prendra possession des quais de l’Escaut de 14h à 23h avec des performances spectaculaires (Sederginne, Level Six, Sylver, DJ Kat, etc.).

  Enfin, de nombreux établissements LGBTQ de la ville organiseront des soirées thématiques, dont la Midsummer Party à Den Draak et une édition spéciale de Woodpop au Cargo Club.

• Antwerp Pride: Parade met recordaantal delegaties en tweetalige livestream

  In Antwerpen is het programma van Antwerp Pride voorgesteld. De achttiende editie vindt dit jaar plaats van donderdag 6 tot en met zondag 10 augustus, met als hoogtepunt de Pride-optocht op zaterdag. Het thema van dit jaar is: ‘Do Not, Just March. Listen. Act. Commit.’ “De afgelopen maanden hebben duidelijk gemaakt dat we niet mogen achteroverleunen als het gaat om mensenrechten,” zegt voorzitter Geert van Praet. “Pride is een feest, maar ook een moment van bewustwording en engagement. Het is nu aan politieke partijen, bedrijven, scholen, vakbonden en verenigingen om hun betrokkenheid ook na het feest waar te maken. Diversiteit en inclusie horen het hele jaar door op de agenda te staan — op de werkvloer, in de klas, op het sportveld.”

  Ook van bezoekers vraagt Antwerp Pride meer dan alleen aanwezigheid: “Luister naar elkaar. Verzet je tegen elke vorm van onrecht, ook internationaal, en engageer je voor álle letters van de LGBTQIA+-gemeenschap, zonder onderscheid. Mensenrechten zijn geen keuzemenu waaruit je alleen je eigen rechten kan kiezen.”

  De samenkomst voor de optocht gebeurt dit jaar niet aan het Sint-Jansplein, maar aan het Hessenplein vanaf 11 uur. De parade start om 14.00 uur en trekt via de Brouwersvliet naar de kaaien. De route loopt langs de rivier en via de Sint-Jansvliet, de Kloosterstraat en de Scheldestraat naar het terrein van het Love United Festival aan de Ledeganckkaai. Dit jaar nemen 87 delegaties deel, vier meer dan vorig jaar.

  Er komen opnieuw waterpunten en afvaleilanden om afval netjes te deponeren. Net als vorig jaar is de parade live te volgen via een livestream bij de mediapartners van Antwerp Pride. Nieuw is dat er ook een Franstalige livestream zal zijn, met schermgezichten uit het Franstalige landsgedeelte — zo kunnen ook Franstalige kijkers de parade live volgen.

  Om 15.00 uur openen de deuren van het Love United Festival op de Cockerillkaai. Op twee podia draaien verschillende dj’s, waaronder TSA Music, DJ Preztone, KroesControl, Crazy Sir G, Nina Black, Arthur Lewis en Andro-G op de Love Stage, en Donna Bummer, AM 2 PM, Laurens Luyten en Dr. T op de United Stage. Het feest duurt tot middernacht en de toegang is gratis. Ook de Pride Village, waar tal van LGBTQIA+-organisaties zich voorstellen, bevindt zich op het festivalterrein.

  Zondag vindt het Closing Festival plaats op de Scheldekaaien van 14.00 tot 23.00 uur met optredens van o.a. Sederginne en haar Antwerp Show Ball queens, Charlie Lima, DJ Digna, Level Six, Red Sebastian, Sylver, Grigri Y El Macho Fantastico en DJ Kat.

   

  De verschillende LGBTQ-horecazaken organiseren ook tal van evenementen. Zo is er op donderdag 7 augustus de traditionele Midsummer Party aan Café Den Draak en op zaterdag een extra spetterende editie van Woodpop in Cargo Club, naast feestjes bij DeLux, Jeffrey’s, Hessenhuis, Club Random en Bonaparte.

• Foreign Affairs updates travel advice for visitors to Budapest Pride

  The Foreign Affairs Department updated its travel advice for Hungary on Thursday. Visitors to the Pride event taking place in Budapest this Saturday are being warned that they may face fines, as the march through the city center has been banned by the authorities.

  "The Hungarian government, through the Minister of Justice, has announced that the Pride March scheduled for 28 June 2025 is prohibited by law," reads the website of the Foreign Affairs Department. "It remains unclear under what conditions the Pride March will take place. Under Hungarian law, participating in a banned demonstration is, in principle, punishable by a fine of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints (approx. 500 EUR). The law also permits the use of facial recognition to identify participants."

  "In light of the above, we remind you that participation in a demonstration not authorised by the Hungarian authorities is the sole responsibility of the individual participant. We advise potential participants to exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation via the media and the social media channels of the embassy in Budapest. For their safety, participants are especially advised to avoid possible counter-demonstrations and, in case of disturbances, to follow the instructions of the local police."

• Affaires étrangères alerte les voyageurs Budapest Pride

  Le service des Affaires étrangères a mis à jour jeudi ses conseils de voyage pour la Hongrie. Les visiteurs de la Pride qui se déroulera samedi à Budapest sont avertis qu’ils peuvent être sanctionnés par des amendes, car la marche à travers le centre-ville a été interdite par les autorités.

  "Le gouvernement hongrois, par l’intermédiaire du ministre de la Justice, a annoncé que la Pride March prévue le 28 juin 2025 est interdite par la loi », peut-on lire sur le site des Affaires étrangères. « Il reste incertain dans quelles conditions la Pride aura lieu. Selon la loi hongroise, la participation à une manifestation interdite est en principe passible d’une amende pouvant aller jusqu’à 200 000 forints hongrois (environ 500 EUR). La loi hongroise autorise l’utilisation de la reconnaissance faciale pour identifier les participants."

   

  "Compte tenu de ce qui précède, nous vous rappelons que la participation à une manifestation non autorisée par les autorités hongroises relève de la responsabilité individuelle de chaque participant. Nous conseillons aux personnes souhaitant y prendre part de faire preuve de vigilance et de suivre l’évolution de la situation via les médias et les réseaux sociaux de l’ambassade à Budapest. Dans l’intérêt de leur sécurité, il leur est particulièrement recommandé de se tenir à l’écart d’éventuelles contre-manifestations et de suivre les instructions de la police locale en cas de troubles."

• Buitenlandse Zaken past reisadvies voor bezoekers van Budapest Pride aan

  De dienst Buitenlandse Zaken heeft donderdag zijn reisadvies voor Hongarije aangepast. Bezoekers aan de Pride die zaterdag in Boedapest doorgaat, worden gewaarschuwd dat ze boetes kunnen oplopen omdat de optocht door het stadscentrum door de autoriteiten is verboden.

  "De Hongaarse regering heeft, bij monde van de minister van Justitie, bekendgemaakt dat de Pride March die gepland staat op 28 juni 2025, door de wet verboden is", zo staat te lezen op de website van Buitenlandse Zaken. "Het blijft onduidelijk onder welke omstandigheden de Pride March zal plaatsvinden. Volgens de Hongaarse wet is deelname aan een verboden demonstratie in principe strafbaar met een boete van maximaal 200.000 Hongaarse forint (+/- 500 EUR). De Hongaarse wet staat het gebruik van gezichtsherkenning toe om deelnemers te identificeren."

   

  "Gezien het bovenstaande herinneren wij u eraan dat deelname aan een demonstratie die niet is toegestaan door de Hongaarse autoriteiten de verantwoordelijkheid is van elke individuele deelnemer. Wij raden eventuele deelnemers aan om de nodige waakzaamheid in acht te nemen en op de hoogte te blijven van de actuele situatie via de media en de sociale media van de ambassade in Boedapest. In het bijzonder worden eventuele deelnemers in het belang van hun veiligheid aangeraden om afstand te houden van mogelijke tegenmanifestaties en om, in geval van ongeregeldheden, de richtlijnen van de lokale politie op te volgen."

• Belgian Delegation Travels to Budapest Pride

  The Belgian LGBTQ+ advocacy group çavaria is heading to Budapest Pride along with a delegation of activists, politicians, and journalists. However, it is still uncertain whether the march scheduled for this Saturday will actually take place. The mayor of Budapest has granted permission, but the police have issued a ban. The Hungarian government recently passed a constitutional ban on public LGBTI+ events, but local activists are refusing to be silenced. Similar delegations are expected from other European countries to help ensure that this Pride does not get quietly cancelled.

  “What is happening in Hungary today doesn’t just affect Hungarian society. It strikes at the core values of the European Union,” says Thomas Jans, spokesperson for çavaria. “With our presence, we express solidarity and also warn that hard-won rights could come under threat elsewhere — including here in Belgium.”

  The situation in Hungary is deeply concerning. For years, Prime Minister Orbán has waged a campaign against equal rights and the visibility of LGBTI+ people. Since April, it has been officially forbidden to organize LGBTI+ events such as Budapest Pride. The right to change one’s legal gender was previously revoked, and a so-called “child protection law” now bans any depiction or discussion of homosexuality or gender diversity for minors. This legislation fosters a climate of censorship, exclusion, and fear.

  Çavaria is calling on Belgian and European policymakers to take a firmer stance against this alarming trend. At the same time, their presence aims to offer encouragement to the Hungarian LGBTI+ community.

   

  To circumvent the Pride ban, Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony has announced that the city itself will host the event. The çavaria delegation will be on site this weekend to report on the situation and connect with Hungarian activists.
