• Floride : un restaurant sommé d’identifier les participants à un drag show

  Le procureur de l'État de Floride a ordonné à un restaurant populaire de Vero Beach d’identifier tous les participants à ses spectacles de drag.

  Le mois dernier, The Kilted Mermaid a organisé un spectacle de drag à l’occasion du mois des fiertés. Selon le procureur général de Floride, James Uthmeier, des « artistes adultes et sexualisés » se sont produits en présence d’enfants.
  En mai, un tribunal fédéral a jugé qu’une loi adoptée en 2023, interdisant les spectacles de drag en Floride, pourrait être inconstitutionnelle. Cette loi, soutenue par le gouverneur républicain Ron DeSantis, visait à sanctionner les établissements qui autorisent des enfants à assister à des « spectacles en direct pour adultes ». Bien que les drag shows ne soient pas mentionnés explicitement, l’auteur de la loi a confirmé qu’ils étaient bel et bien visés. En vertu de cette loi, la licence d’alcool des établissements pouvait être révoquée. Le tribunal a temporairement suspendu la mesure après qu’un restaurant local ait introduit un recours en justice, invoquant une atteinte à la liberté d’expression.

   

  Cette suspension n’a pas empêché Uthmeier de convoquer The Kilted Mermaid par voie de citation. Cette citation, émise plus tôt ce mois-ci, exige la remise des listes d’invités, des registres de réservation, des vidéos de surveillance et des contrats identifiant les artistes. Le procureur a annoncé cette décision dans un communiqué de presse rempli de rhétorique anti-LGBTQ, attaquant les dizaines de milliers de personnes ayant assisté à des événements de drag dans l’État : "En Floride, nous ne sacrifions pas l’innocence des enfants pour les perversions de quelques adultes dérangés."

• Florida Subpoenas Restaurant Over Drag Show Guests

  The public prosecutor of the U.S. state of Florida has ordered a popular restaurant in Vero Beach to identify all attendees of its drag shows.

  Last month, The Kilted Mermaid restaurant hosted a drag performance to celebrate Pride Month. According to Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, “adult, sexualized performers” performed in the presence of children.
  In May, a federal court ruled that a 2023 law banning drag shows in Florida may be unconstitutional. The law, supported by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, aimed to punish venues that allow children to attend “adult live performances.” While drag shows were not explicitly mentioned, the sponsor of the legislation stated that such performances were indeed the target. Under the law, establishments could have their liquor licenses revoked. The court temporarily blocked the law after a local restaurant that hosted drag shows filed a legal challenge, arguing the measure violated free speech rights.

   

  That suspension did not stop Uthmeier from issuing a subpoena to The Kilted Mermaid. The subpoena, issued earlier this month, requests copies of guest lists, reservation records, surveillance footage, and contracts identifying performers. The prosecutor announced the action in a press release, which was filled with anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and attacked the tens of thousands of people who have attended drag events in the state: “In Florida, we don’t sacrifice the innocence of children for the perversions of some demented adults.”

  De openbare aanklager van de Amerikaanse staat Florida heeft een populair restaurant in Vero Beach bevolen om alle aanwezigen tijdens dragshows te identificeren.

  Vorige maand organiseerde het populaire restaurant The Kilted Mermaid, ter gelegenheid van de Pride-maand, een dragshow. Volgens de procureur-generaal van de staat Florida, James Uthmeier, traden er in aanwezigheid van kinderen “volwassen, geseksualiseerde artiesten” op.
  In mei oordeelde een federale rechtbank dat een in 2023 goedgekeurde wet die dragshows in Florida verbiedt, mogelijk ongrondwettelijk is. De met steun van de Republikeinse gouverneur Ron DeSantis goedgekeurde wet wil locaties bestraffen die kinderen toelaten tot “livevoorstellingen voor volwassenen”. Hoewel dragshows niet expliciet worden genoemd, gaf de initiatiefnemer van de wet aan dat die optredens wel degelijk het doelwit zijn. Volgens de wet kon de drankvergunning van betrokken horecazaken worden ingetrokken. De federale rechtbank schortte de wet voorlopig op, nadat een lokaal restaurant dat dragshows organiseerde naar de rechter stapte. Die oordeelde dat de wet mogelijk een inbreuk vormt op de vrijheid van meningsuiting.

  Die opschorting weerhield Uthmeier er niet van om het restaurant The Kilted Mermaid te dagvaarden. De dagvaarding, die eerder deze maand werd uitgevaardigd, vraagt om kopieën van gastenlijsten, reserveringsregisters, bewakingsbeelden en contracten waarin artiesten worden geïdentificeerd. Dat maakte de procureur zelf bekend in een persbericht. Die verklaring zat vol anti-LGBTQ-retoriek en viel de tienduizenden burgers aan die drag-evenementen in de staat hebben bijgewoond: “In Florida offeren we de onschuld van kinderen niet op voor de perversies van een stel gestoorde volwassenen.”

• Le Comité olympique des États-Unis exclut les femmes transgenres

  Le Comité olympique et paralympique des États-Unis (USOPC) a discrètement modifié son règlement afin d’interdire aux femmes transgenres de participer aux compétitions sportives féminines. Ce changement signifie que l’USOPC se conforme au décret présidentiel 14201, proclamé en janvier : Interdire les hommes dans le sport féminin.

  Jusqu’à présent, l’USOPC laissait aux fédérations sportives nationales le soin de décider d’exclure ou non les athlètes trans.
  La nouvelle déclaration de politique a été publiée lundi sans communication officielle sur le site internet du Comité et envoyée par courrier aux fédérations nationales. Avec le décret de Trump, les filles et femmes trans sont exclues du sport scolaire et universitaire, et des restrictions sont également imposées aux athlètes trans étrangères souhaitant concourir aux États-Unis. Puisque les Jeux olympiques et paralympiques de 2028 auront lieu à Los Angeles, cette nouvelle politique s’appliquerait également à ces deux événements.

  Dans un communiqué de presse, le National Women’s Law Center a condamné la modification du règlement par l’USOPC.

  "Le monde observe avec inquiétude la perte de liberté et d’opportunités dans notre pays, surtout alors que les États-Unis sont censés accueillir de futurs événements olympiques", a déclaré Fatima Goss Graves, présidente et directrice générale du Law Center.
  "Le Comité apprendra, comme tant d’autres institutions, qu’il n’y a aucun avantage à céder aux exigences sans fin, instables et capricieuses de la Maison Blanche."

   

  "En cédant à la pression politique, l’USOPC sacrifie les besoins et la sécurité de ses propres athlètes. Le flou de cette nouvelle politique expose les sportifs à des tests de genre humiliants. Les athlètes devront désormais subir des interrogatoires intrusifs et des examens physiques traumatisants pour prouver qu’elles sont ‘suffisamment femmes’ pour participer. L’USOPC devrait consacrer son énergie aux inégalités réelles et graves qui nuisent aux sportives : moins d’opportunités de participation que les garçons et les hommes, des infrastructures, encadrements et équipements de moindre qualité qui augmentent les risques de blessures pour les filles et les femmes, et des cas généralisés de harcèlement sexuel et d’agressions contre les sportives. "

• US Olympic Committee excludes transgender women

  The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has quietly amended its regulations to bar transgender women from participating in women’s sports. With this move, the USOPC aligns itself with Presidential Order 14201, issued in January: Ban men from women’s sports.

  Until now, the USOPC had left decisions about excluding trans athletes up to the national sports federations.
  The amended policy statement was published Monday without announcement on the Committee’s website and was also sent by letter to the national sports bodies. With Trump’s presidential order, trans girls and women are excluded from school and college sports, and restrictions are also imposed on foreign trans athletes who wish to compete in the U.S. As the Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place in Los Angeles in 2028, the new policy would also apply to both events.

  In a press release, the National Women’s Law Center condemned the USOPC’s decision to amend its regulations.

  “The world is watching with alarm at the loss of freedom and opportunity in our country, especially as the United States is expected to host future Olympic events,” said Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the Law Center.
  “The Committee will learn, as so many other institutions have, that there is no benefit in appeasing the endless, shifting, and petulant demands coming out of the White House.”

   

  “By giving in to political pressure, the USOPC is sacrificing the needs and safety of its own athletes. The vagueness of the Committee’s policy will leave athletes unprotected from humiliating sex-testing practices. Athletes will now be subject to intrusive questioning and traumatizing physical exams to prove they are ‘woman enough’ to participate. The USOPC should focus its energy on the real and serious inequalities harming women athletes: fewer opportunities to participate in sports compared to boys and men; worse facilities, coaching, and equipment, putting girls and women at greater risk of injury; and widespread sexual harassment and assault against female athletes.”

• Olympisch Comité VS weert transvrouwen

  De Amerikaanse Olympische en Paralympische Commissie (USOPC) heeft in alle stilte haar reglementen aangepast zodat transgender vrouwen voortaan niet meer kunnen deelnemen aan vrouwensporten. Daarmee legt de USOPC zich neer bij het in januari afgekondigde presidentiële besluit 14201: Mannen weren uit vrouwensport.

  Tot nu toe liet de USOPC de beslissing over het al dan niet toelaten van trans atleten over aan de nationale sportbonden.
  De gewijzigde beleidsverklaring werd maandag zonder aankondiging gepubliceerd op de website van de commissie en per brief overgemaakt aan de nationale sportbonden. Met het presidentiële besluit van Trump worden trans meisjes en vrouwen uitgesloten van school- en universiteitssporten, en er worden ook beperkingen opgelegd voor buitenlandse trans atleten die in de VS aan wedstrijden willen deelnemen. Aangezien de Olympische en Paralympische Spelen in 2028 in Los Angeles plaatsvinden, zou het nieuwe beleid ook van toepassing zijn op beide evenementen.

  In een persbericht veroordeelt het National Women’s Law Center de aanpassing van het reglement door de USOPC. “De wereld kijkt met bezorgdheid toe naar het verlies van vrijheid en kansen in ons land, zeker nu de Verenigde Staten verwacht worden om in de toekomst Olympische evenementen te organiseren,” zei Fatima Goss Graves, voorzitter en CEO van het Law Center.
  “Het Comité zal leren, zoals zovele andere instellingen, dat er geen voordeel is in het toegeven aan de eindeloze, wispelturige en kinderachtige eisen die uit het Witte Huis komen.”

  “Door toe te geven aan politieke druk offert het USOPC de noden en veiligheid van zijn eigen atleten op. De vaagheid van het beleid van het Comité zal atleten onbeschermd laten tegen vernederende geslachtstests. Atleten zullen nu onderworpen worden aan opdringerige ondervragingen en traumatiserende lichamelijke onderzoeken om te bewijzen dat ze ‘vrouw genoeg’ zijn om mee te mogen doen. Het USOPC zou zijn energie moeten richten op de echte en ernstige ongelijkheden die vrouwelijke atleten schaden: minder kansen om deel te nemen aan sporten in vergelijking met jongens en mannen; slechtere faciliteiten, coaching en uitrusting, wat meisjes en vrouwen meer risico op blessures oplevert; en wijdverspreide seksuele intimidatie en aanranding van vrouwelijke atleten.”

• USA supprime la ligne suicide LGBTQ+ jeunes.

  Le département américain de la Santé publique, dirigé par Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a mis fin à une ligne d’assistance téléphonique dédiée spécifiquement aux jeunes LGBTQ. La ligne d'urgence, connue sous le nom de « Press 3 Option », n’est plus accessible depuis le jeudi 17 juillet. Plusieurs ONG avaient pourtant demandé au gouvernement de ne pas fermer cette ligne de prévention du suicide.

  Cette ligne faisait partie du service national d’assistance 988 pour le suicide et les crises, et avait été mise en place en collaboration avec le Trevor Project. Son objectif était d’orienter les jeunes LGBTQ en détresse vers les services d’aide appropriés.

   

  La ligne de prévention LGBTQ a été lancée en 2022 et avait reçu 1.752 appels en septembre de cette même année. En février de cette année, le nombre moyen d’appels mensuels était déjà monté à 58.924. L’investiture de Donald Trump en janvier a entraîné un pic, avec plus de soixante mille appels reçus ce mois-là.

• Amerikaanse overheid schrapt zelfmoordlijn voor LGBTQ+ jongeren

  Het Amerikaanse departement van Volksgezondheid, dat wordt aangevoerd door Robert F. Kennedy Jr., heeft de stekker uitgetrokken van een zelfmoordlijn die zich specifiek richtte op LGBTQ-jongeren. De noodhulplijn, die bekend stond als ‘Press 3 Option’, is vanaf donderdag 17 juli niet meer bereikbaar. Verschillende ngo’s hadden de overheid opgeroepen om de zelfmoordlijn niet te sluiten.

  De hulplijn maakte deel uit van de nationale 988 Zelfmoord- en Crisislijn, en was mede opgezet door het Trevor Project. Het doel was om LGBTQ-jongeren die in crisis verkeerden, naar de juiste hulpinstanties te begeleiden.

  De LGBTQ-zelfmoordlijn begon in 2022 en kreeg in september van dat jaar 1.752 oproepen. In februari van dit jaar was dat aantal al opgelopen tot gemiddeld 58.924 oproepen per maand. De inauguratie van Donald Trump in januari zorgde ervoor dat de hulplijn toen meer dan zestigduizend oproepen kreeg.

• Negen Amerikaanse LGBTQ+organisaties krijgen geschrapte subsidies toch toegekend

  Negen Amerikaanse organisaties die zich bezighouden met het ondersteunen van LGBTQ+-personen en hiv-patiënten moeten de ruim 6,2 miljoen dollar aan subsidies die president Donald Trump had geschrapt, toch krijgen. Dat oordeelde een federale rechter.

  Donald Trump ondertekende na zijn inauguratie in januari een reeks presidentiële orders, waardoor de federale subsidies voor verschillende LGBTQ+-organisaties werden ingetrokken. In juni oordeelde een federale rechter al dat de presidentiële bevelen ongrondwettelijk waren en in strijd met zowel het Eerste als het Vijfde Amendement van de Amerikaanse Grondwet.

  Lambda Legal, dat de negen organisaties in de zaak vertegenwoordigde, bevestigde eerder deze week dat de subsidies opnieuw zijn toegekend. “Als we vechten, winnen we,” aldus Jose Abrigo van Lambda Legal. “We weten dat het gevecht verre van over is en dat er nog tegenslagen zullen volgen, maar het doel is te belangrijk en de noden zijn te groot om de moed te verliezen.”

   

  De subsidies van de volgende negen organisaties werden hersteld: San Francisco AIDS Foundation, het Los Angeles LGBT Center, de GLBT Historical Society, het San Francisco Community Health Center, Prisma Community Care, het NYC LGBT Community Center, het Bradbury-Sullivan Community Center, Baltimore Safe Haven en FORGE.

• No fines for participants in Budapest Pride

  Participants in the banned Pride march in Budapest on June 28 no longer have to fear fines or prison sentences. In a statement, the Budapest police announced that they will not take further legal action against the more than 200,000 people who joined the banned march.

  The announcement came as a surprise. In the days leading up to the parade, police had prohibited the event, citing a law passed in March by Viktor Orbán's government that bans all LGBTQ+ events. Participants in such “prohibited” gatherings risk fines of up to 500 euros. Organisers of LGBTQ+ events face prison sentences of up to one year. Police are also allowed to use facial recognition technology to identify and fine participants.

   

  Eventually, the mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, declared that Pride was a “municipal celebration” and could not be banned under Hungarian law. The mayor is now himself the subject of a police investigation. Observers see the police’s decision as a new and unexpected defeat for Orbán’s authoritarian policies. The record turnout at the Pride march was also seen as a strong signal of resistance to the government’s repressive stance.
