  • Transgender women in the UK no longer recognised as women

The Scottish Supreme Court has ruled that the terms "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex, and do not include trans women whose gender has been legally recognized through a certificate. “This ruling could remove vital protections and leaves many trans people and their loved ones deeply worried about how their lives will be affected and what comes next,” said Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman after the judgment was read aloud. The ruling of the Court  in Edinburgh has consequences for all trans women in the United Kingdom.

The case was brought forward by the campaign group For Women Scotland (FWS), which challenged the Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scotland) Act 2018. That law aimed to increase female representation on public boards. FWS opposed the inclusion of transgender women in the definition of "woman." The Court of Session in Edinburgh ruled that the Scottish Parliament had exceeded its legal powers by altering the definition. In response, the Scottish Government removed the revised definition and issued new legal guidance.

This guidance stated that the 2018 law aligned with the Equality Act 2010, and that trans individuals with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) — legally acknowledging their gender as female — should be considered women under the Gender Recognition Act 2004.

FWS also challenged the new guidance, arguing that the term "sex" in the Equality Act refers exclusively to biological sex, and that the government had overstepped its authority by effectively redefining the term "woman." They warned that this could affect the operation of single-sex spaces and services.

FWS’s objections were previously dismissed twice by the Court of Session, with Lady Haldane ruling in 2022 that the definition of sex “is not limited to biological or birth sex.”

But on Wednesday, the Scottish Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refer strictly to biological women and biological sex. “We caution against viewing this ruling as a victory for one group in our society at the expense of another,” said Court President Lord Hodge as he began reading the 88-page judgment.

He emphasised that the Equality Act 2010 still protects transgender people — not only under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment, but also from direct and indirect discrimination and harassment in their acquired gender. These legal protections apply regardless of whether a person holds a Gender Recognition Certificate.

The judges also reiterated that the Equality Act adheres to a binary understanding of sex: a person is either male or female. Legal provisions that refer to women’s rights necessarily exclude men.

The judgment was celebrated by FWS supporters, while trans activists left the courtroom visibly disappointed. “This now gives absolute clarity in the law: when we see a space marked ‘for women only’, that’s exactly what it means,” said Trina Budge of FWS. “Only women. No men. Not even with a certificate.”

A Scottish Government spokesperson responded: “This ruling provides clarity and confidence — both for women and for service providers such as hospitals, shelters, and sports clubs. Single-sex spaces are protected by law, and this government will continue to uphold that protection.”

  • Greek gay and bisexual men can no longer donate blood

Greece has reinstated the ban on blood donations from men who have had sex with other men (MSM). This ban had been lifted in 2022 by the Ministry of Health.

As in most countries, Greek MSM were previously not allowed to donate blood in order to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. The Ministry lifted the ban partly due to the global blood shortage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Greek Council of State ruled that the Ministry, in lifting the ban, disregarded medical recommendations from experts and that the decision was not sufficiently supported by scientific evidence. The Council therefore decided that the ban on blood donations by MSM will remain in effect until a scientific evaluation has been conducted.

  • Georgia seeks to ban pride parades in new homophobic bill

In Georgia, a bill has been introduced aiming to ban LGBTQ+ pride parades and related merchandise. This was confirmed on Friday by Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, during a press conference. Before the bill can be voted on in Parliament, the Human Rights Committee must first issue its opinion.

In recent years, the ruling populist and conservative party, Georgian Dream, has taken an increasingly hostile stance toward diversity. Last year, following the adoption of the controversial foreign agents law, Georgian Dream approved a homophobic legislative package banning “LGBT propaganda,” same-sex marriage, and gender-affirming medical care. These measures are officially intended to protect “family values and minors.” The same arguments were also used to silence critics ahead of the 2024 elections.

LGBTQ+ pride parades, as referenced in the proposed law, have not yet taken place in Georgia. In July 2021, a pride parade was scheduled for the first time in the capital, Tbilisi, but a large violent attack organized by the pro-Russian group Alt-Info led to assaults on activists’ offices and the journalists present.

  • Georgië wil prideoptochten verbieden in nieuw homofoob wetsvoorstel

  • Minor trans woman dies in Dutch asylum centre

At the Dutch asylum centre in Ter Apel, a 17-year-old transgender woman who had fled from Russia has died. This was reported by the Dutch organisation LGBT Asylum Support on its website. The organisation has now sent an urgent open letter for the twelfth time to Minister for Asylum and Migration Faber (PVV).

Alice applied for asylum in the Netherlands in December 2023, after fleeing her home country. Despite being a minor, she was placed in a shelter for adults, without the appropriate guidance or protection. On 28 December 2023, she became the victim of rape at the facility.

Despite repeated reports of her suicidal ideation, she initially received insufficient care from COA (the Dutch Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers). After being transferred to the Amsterdam asylum centre, her condition deteriorated due to neglect and lack of support, ultimately leading to her death on 27 March 2025.“It is unacceptable that a minor was left to fend for herself in a facility meant for adults,” emphasised Sandro Kortekaas, chair of LGBT Asylum Support.

The organisation is calling on the government to launch a thorough investigation, and advocates for separate accommodation with intensive care for vulnerable LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers, especially for queer minors, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
