• Minister Beenders criticizes VRT MAX for giving a platform to homophobic influencer

  In the Social Affairs Committee, Minister for Persons with Disabilities and Equal Opportunities Rob Beenders (Vooruit) elaborated on his earlier comment regarding the documentary on the homophobic influencer Andrew Tate, which remains available on the VRT MAX streaming platform without any context.
  “Andrew Tate has a significant influence on social media and became particularly well known for his homophobic and also misogynistic statements,” said Beenders. “And it is mainly because of these statements that he has gained such a following on social media, especially among younger audiences. I find that quite concerning.”

  In the documentary, Tate’s statements are shown unfiltered. “Some of the explicit footage is deeply troubling, especially considering the impact it can have on youth. For example, the exploitation of girls to build his company and earn millions is shown uncensored — including clips in which the profits are applauded. In another scene, he presents his lifestyle as the dream of every teenage boy.”

  For Minister Beenders, these messages are problematic, and the documentary offers a one-sided perspective by only using existing footage without critical context or analysis. He is also concerned that the homophobic influencer is being given a platform via VRT MAX until the end of August to spread his homophobic and misogynistic views.

   

  However, media oversight does not fall within Minister Beenders’ remit, and he cannot officially contact VRT about the documentary. “What does fall under my responsibility is the promotion of an inclusive society and a policy focused on equal opportunities, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or other protected characteristics. In line with that mission, I will continue to work actively to protect the rights of LGBTI+ people and to combat discrimination and hate speech, both online and offline,” said the minister on Tuesday in the Social Affairs Committee.

  Lors de la commission des Affaires sociales, le ministre en charge des Personnes handicapées et de l'Égalité des chances, Rob Beenders (Vooruit), a apporté des précisions sur son commentaire précédent concernant le documentaire sur l’influenceur homophobe Andrew Tate, toujours disponible sur la plateforme de streaming VRT MAX sans mise en contexte.
  « Andrew Tate exerce une influence considérable sur les réseaux sociaux et s’est fait connaître notamment par ses propos homophobes, mais aussi misogynes », a déclaré Beenders. « C’est en grande partie grâce à ces propos qu’il a acquis une large audience, surtout chez les jeunes. Je trouve cela personnellement très préoccupant. »

  Dans le documentaire, les propos de Tate sont montrés sans filtre. « Il est inquiétant de voir certaines images explicites, surtout en raison de l’impact potentiel sur les jeunes. Par exemple, l’exploitation de jeunes filles pour monter son entreprise et gagner des millions est montrée sans censure, avec des séquences où les montants générés suscitent des applaudissements. Dans un autre extrait, il présente sa vie comme le rêve de tout adolescent. »

  Pour le ministre, ces messages sont problématiques, et le documentaire présente une perspective biaisée en utilisant uniquement des images existantes sans contextualisation ni analyse critique. Il juge également préoccupant que l’influenceur homophobe bénéficie d’une plateforme sur VRT MAX jusqu’à fin août pour diffuser ses propos homophobes et misogynes.

   

  Les médias ne relèvent toutefois pas de la compétence du ministre Beenders, qui ne peut donc officiellement pas contacter la VRT à ce sujet. « Ce qui relève bien de ma compétence, c’est de promouvoir au maximum une société inclusive et de mettre l’accent sur une politique d’égalité des chances, indépendamment de l’orientation sexuelle, de l’identité de genre ou d’autres caractéristiques protégées. Dans ce cadre, je continuerai à m’engager activement pour la défense des droits des personnes LGBTI+ et contre les discours de haine et la discrimination, tant en ligne que hors ligne », a conclu le ministre mardi en commission.

  In de commissie Sociale Zaken heeft minister voor Personen met een Handicap en Gelijke Kansen Rob Beenders (Vooruit) meer uitleg gegeven over zijn eerdere opmerking dat de reportage over de homofobe influencer Andrew Tate zonder duiding nog steeds te zien is op het streamingplatform VRT MAX.
  “Andrew Tate heeft een aanzienlijke invloed op sociale media en is vooral bekend geworden door zijn homofobe, maar ook zijn vrouwonvriendelijke uitspraken”, aldus Beenders. “En het is vooral door die uitspraken dat hij een grote aanhang heeft gekregen op sociale media, vooral onder jongere doelgroepen. Dat vind ik persoonlijk vrij zorgwekkend.”

  In de documentaire worden de uitspraken van Tate ongefilterd getoond. “Het is verontrustend om sommige expliciete beelden te zien, vooral gezien de impact die dit kan hebben op jongeren. Bijvoorbeeld de exploitatie van meisjes om zijn bedrijf op te zetten en miljoenen te verdienen. Die beelden worden gewoon ongesensureerd getoond, inclusief fragmenten waarin wordt geapplaudisseerd voor de bedragen die hij op die manier genereerde. In een ander fragment presenteert hij zijn leven als de droom van elke tienerjongen.”

  Voor minister Beenders zijn deze boodschappen problematisch, en toont de documentaire een eenzijdig perspectief door uitsluitend bestaand beeldmateriaal te gebruiken zonder kritische context of analyse. De minister vindt het ook zorgwekkend dat de homofobe influencer via VRT MAX tot eind augustus een platform krijgt om zijn homofobe en vrouwonvriendelijke uitspraken te verspreiden.

   

  Media vallen echter niet onder de bevoegdheid van minister Beenders, en hij kan dus officieel geen contact opnemen met de VRT over de documentaire. “Wat wel onder mijn bevoegdheid valt, is het maximaal bevorderen van een inclusieve samenleving, het focussen op het beleid voor gelijke kansen, ongeacht seksuele geaardheid, genderidentiteit of andere beschermde kenmerken. En in lijn met dat doel zal ik actief blijven werken aan de bescherming van de rechten van LGBTI+-personen en de strijd tegen discriminatie en haatzaaiende uitlatingen tegen verschillende doelgroepen, zowel online als offline”, zo zei de minister dinsdag in de commissie Sociale Zaken.
