  • Facebook censors post from Antwerp’s Rainbow Library

This past weekend, Facebook removed a post from RegenboogBib, located in Antwerp’s Roze Huis, due to the presence of bare buttocks on a book cover used as an illustration. In addition, restrictions were also imposed.

On March 23rd, RegenboogBib reopened its doors in the Roze Huis, above café Den Draak. This past weekend, Marc Daems, one of the volunteers at RegenboogBib, reposted an earlier message listing all the LGBTQIA+ books, comics, poetry, and films available for borrowing. Just like in the original post, the cover of the book Jongenssprookjes Deel 3 by Eric Kollen was included. It features a man in a hoodie with his buttocks exposed and an Arabic tattoo. The post was removed almost immediately.

In recent months, following the re-election of Donald Trump, Meta — the company behind Facebook — has adjusted its moderation policies and its approach to minority groups. This was largely due to pressure from conservative right-wing groups claiming that Meta was censoring their posts.

Third-party fact-checking was phased out and replaced with a system of “community notes,” allowing users to add comments. Posts with so-called “dangerous” content — such as terrorism, child sexual exploitation, drugs, fraud, and scams — are now monitored by automated systems. That appears to be what happened with the removed RegenboogBib post.

Since the switch, it seems increasingly common for posts from LGBTQ+ organizations and content creators to be taken down. GayliveBe has also been a victim of this several times recently. Many transgender content creators have faced restrictions, and their posts are being labeled as “harmful” more than ever.

  • Greek gay and bisexual men can no longer donate blood

Greece has reinstated the ban on blood donations from men who have had sex with other men (MSM). This ban had been lifted in 2022 by the Ministry of Health.

As in most countries, Greek MSM were previously not allowed to donate blood in order to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. The Ministry lifted the ban partly due to the global blood shortage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Greek Council of State ruled that the Ministry, in lifting the ban, disregarded medical recommendations from experts and that the decision was not sufficiently supported by scientific evidence. The Council therefore decided that the ban on blood donations by MSM will remain in effect until a scientific evaluation has been conducted.

  • Brussels RainbowHouse Restores Partnership with RTBF after Uproar over Transphobic Sketch

RainbowHouse Brussels has reinstated its partnership with RTBF in the run-up to Brussels Pride.
Last year, the partnership between the LGBTQ+ organization and the Walloon broadcaster was suspended after a transphobic sketch aired on September 24 during the satirical program Le Grand Cactus on Tip!k. The sketch referenced the song 3e sexe by the band Indochine and singer Rahim Redcar.

In the segment, Belgian comedian Damien Gillard and French comedian Cécile Giroud performed a song titled Le 128e sexe, a parody of Le 3e sexe by Indochine. The song mocked the fact that transgender people change gender and suggested that there are more than two genders.

In a statement on its social media channels, RainbowHouse said that, in the weeks following the broadcast, it had contacted RTBF and sat down at the table with them, together with the IEFH (Institute for the Equality of Women and Men) and the CSA (High Council for the Audiovisual Sector).

“The dialogue between RTBF and various associations, collectives, and LGBTQIA+ activists made it possible to clarify the feelings and realities of those involved, starting as early as September 2024,” the statement reads. “This meeting was marked by a rich, open, and constructive discussion. We observed that RTBF did not wait for the resolution of this situation to strengthen its efforts toward awareness around diversity — and especially LGBTQIA+ issues.”

Just a few days after the sketch aired, the organizations had already met. RTBF showed that since 2022 it has been organizing training sessions for its internal departments and the Le Grand Cactus team. In collaboration with Média-Animation vzw and the LGBTQIA+ federation Prisme, RTBF also developed a “toolkit” to integrate diversity principles into the company. Concrete actions have been taken, such as content warnings on social media, a radio show on trans identities (Les Clés d’Arnaud Ruyssen), additional content in the LGBTQIA+ section of the RTBF Tip!k platform and RTBF Auvio, as well as various video clips and testimonies on RTBF Vews.

During this period, the IEFH and the CSA received complaints from LGBTQIA+ stakeholders. Each institution is processing the files independently. Following these complaints, the IEFH issued several recommendations. The final report from the CSA is expected in the coming weeks.

  • Georgia seeks to ban pride parades in new homophobic bill

In Georgia, a bill has been introduced aiming to ban LGBTQ+ pride parades and related merchandise. This was confirmed on Friday by Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, during a press conference. Before the bill can be voted on in Parliament, the Human Rights Committee must first issue its opinion.

In recent years, the ruling populist and conservative party, Georgian Dream, has taken an increasingly hostile stance toward diversity. Last year, following the adoption of the controversial foreign agents law, Georgian Dream approved a homophobic legislative package banning “LGBT propaganda,” same-sex marriage, and gender-affirming medical care. These measures are officially intended to protect “family values and minors.” The same arguments were also used to silence critics ahead of the 2024 elections.

LGBTQ+ pride parades, as referenced in the proposed law, have not yet taken place in Georgia. In July 2021, a pride parade was scheduled for the first time in the capital, Tbilisi, but a large violent attack organized by the pro-Russian group Alt-Info led to assaults on activists’ offices and the journalists present.

  • Loreen replaces controversial Azealia Banks at Milkshake Festival

Loreen will replace Azealia Banks at the Milkshake Festival in Amsterdam. The organization has confirmed the appearance of the two-time Eurovision Song Contest winner.

On Sunday, July 27, Loreen will perform on the Supertoys stage. In February of this year, the festival — which attracts many LGBTQ+ attendees annually — came under fire after it was announced that Azealia Banks would be performing. Banks has made several controversial statements in the past about transgender people and gay men. Following the announcement, many outraged reactions appeared on the festival’s social media channels. Eventually, the organizers admitted they had made a mistake, canceled Banks’ performance, and began looking for a replacement.

That replacement turned out to be Loreen. If you want to see her at Milkshake, you’d better hurry — Sunday, like Saturday, is almost sold out.

  • Young people are increasingly less open toward LGBTQ+ individuals

Acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals among young people in Flanders and Brussels is steadily declining. This is evident from new data published by the Youth Research Platform (JOP). The research shows that more and more young people are not open to people who are gay or lesbian, find violence against them acceptable, and oppose same-sex marriage. The LGBTQ+ umbrella organization çavaria is calling on Flemish Minister of Education Zuhal Demir (N-VA) and the various educational networks to implement a structural and LGBTQI+-inclusive approach in schools as a matter of urgency.

On a scale from 0 to 10, Flemish youth scored 3.2 on homophobia in 2023. Five years earlier, in 2018, the score was still at 2.04. The survey involved over 1,500 students in their fifth and sixth year of secondary school, three-quarters of whom live in Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent. The decline is visible across the board: among both boys and girls, religious and non-religious students, and in both general and vocational streams.

Opposition to same-sex marriage is also increasing, as is the number of young people who would prefer not to have a gay teacher. Jewish and Muslim students scored the highest on average for homophobia, with 5.43 and 5.38 out of 10, respectively. These are the only groups that lean towards the homophobic end of the scale. Overall, however, Flemish youth still remain on the tolerant side.

“These new numbers are alarming, but not surprising,” says Eef Heylighen of çavaria. “We’re seeing the same trend in earlier studies, such as our School Climate Survey, which looked at the experiences of LGBTI+ students. That study found that 60.4 percent felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, and 10 percent had been physically assaulted. This makes the need to improve acceptance of LGBTI+ people even more urgent.”

Çavaria is therefore urging Minister Zuhal Demir and the educational networks to implement a structural and LGBTI+-inclusive policy at schools. That means giving schools the clear mandate and sufficient resources to create a learning environment where it is safe to be yourself — including for LGBTI+ students.

  • Minor trans woman dies in Dutch asylum centre

At the Dutch asylum centre in Ter Apel, a 17-year-old transgender woman who had fled from Russia has died. This was reported by the Dutch organisation LGBT Asylum Support on its website. The organisation has now sent an urgent open letter for the twelfth time to Minister for Asylum and Migration Faber (PVV).

Alice applied for asylum in the Netherlands in December 2023, after fleeing her home country. Despite being a minor, she was placed in a shelter for adults, without the appropriate guidance or protection. On 28 December 2023, she became the victim of rape at the facility.

Despite repeated reports of her suicidal ideation, she initially received insufficient care from COA (the Dutch Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers). After being transferred to the Amsterdam asylum centre, her condition deteriorated due to neglect and lack of support, ultimately leading to her death on 27 March 2025.“It is unacceptable that a minor was left to fend for herself in a facility meant for adults,” emphasised Sandro Kortekaas, chair of LGBT Asylum Support.

The organisation is calling on the government to launch a thorough investigation, and advocates for separate accommodation with intensive care for vulnerable LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers, especially for queer minors, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

  • Belgium Opposes U.S. Ban on Diversity Policies

Both our country and France are displeased with the letter sent via U.S. embassies to European companies doing business with the U.S. government. That letter exerts pressure on European companies to end their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Shortly after taking office, Donald Trump signed several executive orders mandating the termination of all DEI programs in American companies. Foreign companies that supply goods and services to U.S. government agencies also fall under these directives. In recent weeks, many companies have already scrapped their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

This weekend, it was also revealed that European companies — including several Belgian ones — received a letter via U.S. embassies containing the order to halt their diversity programs as well.

As soon as the reports surfaced, the FPS Foreign Affairs immediately contacted the U.S. embassy. Belgium has clearly expressed its concerns and is now assessing the legal implications for the affected companies.

The issue is not only one of principle, but also legally relevant: the U.S. embassy must act in accordance with Belgian law. If contracts are terminated solely because a company is committed to diversity and inclusion, that could constitute a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

“It is deeply regrettable that the United States — a country whose administration once led the defense of shared values such as diversity — is now taking a step backward,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot (Les Engagés) in a press release. “Belgium will not back down an inch. We remain firmly committed to an inclusive society in which companies are free to attract, support, and nurture talent. Those who dismantle diversity limit themselves and undermine their own economic future.”

Diversity and inclusion are not optional ideals, but the foundations of a strong economy and dynamic society. They drive innovation, strengthen competitiveness, and allow talent to reach its full potential. “Those who see inclusion as an obstacle fail to realize that it is in fact a lever for progress,” Prévot emphasized.

The Belgian federal government leaves no room for doubt: equal opportunities are central to the coalition agreement and remain a steadfast pillar of our policy. Undermining inclusion programs harms not only the companies themselves, but also broader cooperation between the European Union and the United States.

“Belgium will continue to promote an open and inclusive business environment within Europe,” Prévot concluded. “We stand for our values and our economic model, based on collaboration, innovation, and respect for everyone’s talent. This is not a matter of preference, but of progress and forward-looking policy.”

  • Stephen Fry receives honorary doctorate from KU Leuven

To mark the 600th anniversary of KU Leuven, British storyteller, actor, and television maker Sir Stephen Fry has been awarded an honorary doctorate. The Faculty of Arts honors him for his passion for language and culture, his impressive contribution to public discourse, and his advocacy for open dialogue around mental well-being.

“Sir Stephen Fry embodies the values the Faculty of Arts stands for,” says Dean Liesbet Heyvaert. “With his sharp pen, vast cultural knowledge, and disarming openness, Stephen Fry demonstrates the power of language. He tackles difficult topics, speaks to both heart and mind, and builds bridges between people.”

Fry’s brilliant linguistic talent and sharp intellect have captivated and inspired a broad audience for decades. His work addresses socially relevant topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, inequality, and mental health — always giving a voice to those who are rarely heard.

As a master storyteller, Fry manages to explore complex issues in an accessible way. His modern adaptations of Greek mythology breathe new life into ancient stories for young and old alike. At the same time, he shows how language, science, and technology can strengthen one another in a rapidly changing world.

“Stephen Fry represents what KU Leuven has stood for over the past 600 years: a critical yet engaged perspective on society, deeply rooted in humanistic values. His voice reminds us of the importance of dialogue, knowledge, and compassion,” says Rector Luc Sels.

The honorary doctorate was awarded during a ceremony at the Great Hall of the Maria-Theresiacollege. The promoters — Dean Prof. Liesbet Heyvaert and Professors Geert Brône and Geert Roskam — praised his love of language, his storytelling skills, and the way he reaches a broad audience across various media and platforms.

This is Fry’s first honorary doctorate on the European mainland. In his inspiring acceptance speech, he shared a powerful message for students — past and present:

“Always remain a student. Just because you leave the walls of this beautiful city and university behind doesn’t mean you should stop learning. Never forget what it means to be an outsider. A heretic, a doubter. Someone who wonders, who searches, who keeps discovering,” said Sir Stephen Fry.

  • Antwerp Pride calls for action with new theme

‘Do not just march, listen. act. commit.’ This call to action is the new theme of Antwerp Pride. It was announced Thursday evening during the official kick-off. The theme reflects the rapidly changing world as we know it since the rise of Donald Trump—jokingly referred to during the kick-off as “the biggest DT mistake in recent years.” The slogan urges everyone not only to join the Pride parade, but also to listen, show solidarity, and (re)affirm their support for the LGBTQ+ community.

“The new theme is actually a bit of a sequel to last year,” says Wilfried Eetezone of Antwerp Pride. “Last year, we had Many Voices, with many underlying themes. We’ve continued that idea. We also thought about something like ‘Just March’, but the world has become more complex. It’s hard to capture everything in one word, so this year we decided to take a different approach.”

With this theme, Antwerp Pride aims to send a message not only to companies but also to the wider community. “It’s more necessary than ever,” Eetezone adds. “Especially considering everything that’s happening—not just in the US, but also in Hungary, Poland, and other countries. It’s really time for us all to come together and show what we stand for. And that doesn’t only mean coming to Pride to party. We’ll keep celebrating, of course, but we’re also asking people to take a moment to reflect on what it means to be here, and what you can do in your own environment to ensure that people at risk of discrimination feel safe.”

Despite the challenging climate, Antwerp Pride president Geert Van Praet sees opportunities. “At first I thought: what is that guy on the other side up to? But it now gives companies a chance to take a stand. Will they continue to support inclusivity, or will they step back? We all know that diversity can’t be stopped. You can slow it down, but consumers have a voice too, and then the story changes. Those who choose not to join us now may win in the short term, but they lose in the long run.”

Van Praet noted that some sponsors pulled out due to pressure from their American parent companies. At the same time, he welcomed new partners like Microsoft and Disney, and praised long-time supporters like Coca-Cola for going the extra mile this year.

The Antwerp Pride program is still being finalized. In addition to the usual events such as the Saturday parade and various parties, a few new elements have been announced. This year, responding to requests from rainbow and blended families, Pride Kids will be introduced—a special program for families with young children.

This year, 83 delegations will take part in the parade. Antwerp Pride will take place from August 10 to 16.
